I love the sharp structure and the white just pops.

London landmark Harrods, probably the most luxurious department in the world and my personal favourite, has been sold today for a reported £1.5 billion to the Qatari royal family.
What does that mean for the store? Will it stay the same in terms of management and the extremely well trained staff? I hope so.

With the Qatari's also owning a substantial percentage and backing One Hyde Park in Knightsbridge does that officially mean Knightsbridge is the new wealthy ghetto for Arabs?

We will miss Mohammed Al Fayed doing his daily sweep of the store, always with a friendly smile and wave.

Christies Crisis Charity event with Prince William

Thursday evening saw Christies host a charity auction event in aid of Crisis, a foundation that helps the homeless in the UK.
Over 100 photographs from the likes of Helmut Newton, Henri Cartier Bresson, Irving Penn, Herb Ritts and of course Jeff Hubbard-the former drug addict turned photographer who took the recent images of Prince William.

HRH was there to greet specially selected guests of Christies which included Vogue editor Alexandra Shulman, model Jade Parfitt, gallery owner Tim Jefferies, stylist and Chanel ambassador Caroline Sieber.
He gave a witty speech and signed the photograph that was to be auctioned which gave way to the proceedings of the evening.

The informal royal portrait by Hubbard went for £22,000 -which by the time I left towards the end of the night was the highest bid of the evening so far- a beautiful Herb Ritts image of Naomi Campbell went for over £8000 and the Ellen Von Unwerth of Kate Moss for £4,500.

Clegg to cap City bonuses at £2500

I don't even work in the City but when I read over a shoulder on the tube that Lib Dem leader, Nick Clegg, has planned to cap City workers bonuses at £2,500 I asked the poor chap to turn back the page as I couldn't believe the utter nonsense I was reading.

A ridiculous notion if there ever was one. Clearly trying to appeal to the working class public who are poised to vote and not hip to the fact that all these financial workers help promote the UK economically worldwide. Think of it like this: pre 2009 you marveled at the exchange rate of £1 to near $2 and took yourself shopping in New York or to Disneyland with the family.
Thank the brokers, traders and fund managers even the 'lower' end of the spectrum, the retail bank staff for making the UK a respected power country.

Yes bonuses of millions of pounds is shocking especially to those who don't understand but these people work incredibly hard, with a significant low social and private life to their professional one.

"All bonuses in excess of £2,500 to be paid in shares only redeemable after five years." Clegg says.

I still laugh when I read the above quote, financial and law PA's get paid bonuses larger than that.

Politicians will do anything to win.

But will I have a body like a Victoria Secrets model?

David Kirsch, famous for sculpting the bodies of those supernatural looking beings -You know who I mean... The Victoria Secrets models- has launched a nutrition line now available in London exclusively at Space NK.
The David Kirsch Wellness line has, the apparently popular, 5 day Detox which consists of appetite suppressing 'shots' to drink daily for five days in which you eat only one green salad. A day. Hmmm.
If that seems a touch intense, (yes) it aims to pure the body of toxins helping shift extra weight.
One British fan lost five pounds on this detox plan.

What is different about these products to the other dietary supplements? DK Wellness apparently has no chemicals in its products

I'm trying the Thermo Bubbles, a sachet of pink lemonade tasting powder to be mixed with a pint of water.

Adeptly and sharply written, Nicholas Coleridge depicts the world of glossy magazines like no other, and he should know, he is the MD at Conde Nast UK.
Just when one thinks they've got the hang of where the plot is veering to, the reader is slammed in surprise of where it ends up.

Cue various cries of 'but of course'.

The term chic is commonly bandied around but the debut ready-to-wear evening collection from Delphine Manivet is the epitome of chic.
At her official launch last night at her new London atelier, lady-like salmon chiffon confection with its exquisite hand sewn beads of a lighter hue were to die for as were the structured dresses one sees Parisien women tripping around in.
Manivet is a favourite amongst French actresses and the high-end set in Paris and the Cote D'Azur as robes de mariees couturier and her skill has trickled effortlessly into evening wear. Friends and clients-as far as Saudi- had jetted in for the launch.
Respectively coloured black and salmon romper suits nonchantly worn with hands in pockets are worn sans chausettes during the day in St Tropez or with killer Gianvito Rossi heels and coltish legs for dinner at Scotts.
Divine divine divine and I simply must have the short long-sleeved black dress with its rigid peplum skirt.

Samantha Cameron, wife of Conservative leader David, has little to worry about as some innocent pictures popped up on todays Daily Mail website.
The most risque one is of her smiling, legs folded to the left while - assumingly- showing a flash of underwear.
According to Amanda Platell, an ex-media advisor to the Tories, the stylist of the shoot found them stuffed away in an attic in the Isle of Wight- how kind of you to then hock them to the tabloids.

A glimpse of sexuality never hurt a first lady- look at Carla Bruni and Princess Letizia of Spain, if anything it propels you into the minds of the public.

Rather people talk about you than not all....

High Society in The City

How amusing that Tinsley Mortimer, New York society princess, would choose now to launch her reality show; 'High Society' in the States.
Perhaps the global allure and the frequent appearance of rumoured arch enemy Olivia Palermo in glossy fashion pages and gossip magazines was too much for the Virginia bred socialite.
According to various New York newspapers and gossip sites, including the much feared now defunct Socialite Rank, which did exactly as its title suggests by ranking socialites on beauty, connection to high fashion, press appearances, being committed for charities or the right events and more importantly, status.
Olivia, then 20 years old, was close to toppling Tinsley from her glided perch by being front row at all the important shows, being beautiful and 'wide eyed'. There wasn't room for the both of them so when SR managed to get their hands on an email being circulated by Palermo in which she begged for forgiveness and friendship, ' a spot on a charity committee and eventually a friendly hello at the Waverley Inn' put the rumour mill into overdrive.
She was attacked and vilified as a poor little status hungry socialite.
Fast forward three years and look at Olivia now; a starring role on The City in which she shows New York that the shy ingenue that once was has gone and its place is a bitchy ruthless iron fist in the external form of a screamingly chic beautiful woman with a sweet smile to boot.
As print dies out and reality TV takes over, put aside that Grandmama said a lady should only be in the newspapers twice in her life, that Mummy said a lady must continously be in Vogue and Page 6, reality TV is the medium for which these celebrities, in their own circles, can finally say they have made it.

According to the NY Post, Tinsley recently divorced from ex-husband Topper Mortimer after falling for a European hedge fund manager, hopefully that is not just the fodder she has to feed the shock tatic hungry, scathing public.

Interview with Pacha dancer Neringa A

It’s like something out of a R&B superstar’s concert; state of the art flashing lights possess the huge space, pulsating electronic beats whip the, some beautiful, some wild-eyed crowd into a frenzy.

Welcome to Pacha Ibiza, the most famous club in the world. Many a superstar DJ has played here and David and Cathy Guetta hold their infamous ‘F*** me I’m Famous’ clubnight here every Thursday during peak season.

A ‘havin’ it large’ type tries to cross the thin barrier between VIP, where tables average €2000, and the dance floor. Within seconds, a snarling bouncer stalks over, literally picks him up and throws him back into the plebian crowd. The troublemaker’s friends look on in awe then slink away.
The centre of attention is not so much the music but the dancers. Look in amazement as a rotating stage ascends with a highly professional pole dancer, who seems more like a Cirque de Soleil contortionist, voguing and posing.
Adding to that excitement are the much-feted Pacha podium dancers. Outrageous sexy costumes, photo-shoot maquillage and hair, they excite even the most jaded and help set the Ibiza party atmosphere.

Neringa A (above) is a student based in London, for the past three years the 22 year-old has been exclusively dancing for Pacha Ibiza. The blonde beauty also features in the video of David Guetta and Akon’s club smash-hit ‘Sexy Bitch’.
She breaks down her ‘summer life’ for Starbright.

How many other dancers work at Pacha?
We have two main groups of dancers. One has six and the other, the one I am in, has 17.

Is there rivalry amongst the girls and especially newcomers?
Of course there is, more between the two groups rather than with the girls inside of the each group. There is always tension in the beginning between the newcomers and the girls who have been there for a couple years already. But in the end, we all get together pretty well.
Some say eight nine years ago, the girls were such a drama queens: competing all the time, fighting heavily and once, even the police was called to calm them down!  

Did you have to audition and is there annual auditions?
Actually I was really lucky! I got introduced through a friend. They gave me a chance to dance one night, they liked me and I stayed! Pacha don‘t do auditions, they keep most of the same dancers every season. Of course, every summer, we have some new dancers. Some have been offered a job because a Pacha rep had seen them dancing and liked them or some contacted Pacha and they were selected.

Did you work in clubs previously or work in Ibiza or London?
Now I think about it, my first work as a podium dancer was in an Ibiza club called Amnesia back in 2005. I did an audition in Lithuania (I still was living there at that time) and I was one of the chosen ones who made through the audition and went to Ibiza to work. Imagine, it was my first job, it was outside my country and I was pretty young too! I experienced a lot and it started to change my world.
After my first summer there I started to get many jobs not just in Lithuanian clubs, but also outside Lithuania as well. Now I already have worked in clubs in France, Egypt, and UK.
How did you get into it?
I‘ve always loved dancing. I used to break dance, from there I moved to “Studija M” where I was learnt hip-hop, street-style moves, but only when I joined a newly opened street-style dance studio called “F.U“ it got serious.
Here I found what it really feels like dancing from your soul and giving all you can.
Our coach was Kestutis Baranauskas who is incredible, he gives this inexpressible energy from himself when he moves which inspires you to move like you never did before.
We formed a new group called “Dance Factory”, training twice a week, performing at some shows and competed in various competitions. At the time when I was dancing there I used to see other girls working as a podium dancers and earning some money while going to school.
So when I got an invitation to casting for podium dancers in Ibiza I didn’t hesitate and from there, it started my experience as a podium dancer.
Sadly I when started to travel and I couldn’t stay in D.F group anymore. I really miss it, we had good times.
Before I joining university, I doubted whether I should go to study Dance or Design. A friend of mine got a leg injury at that time and he had to stay without dancing for almost half of the year, and dancing was all he had
Seeing how much he suffered made me study Design, something safer, although I’m still attracted to design.

Who does the amazing artistic hair and make-up?
The hair is done by two hairdressers: Carlos, a Spanish senior, who is working in Pacha for many years, and Luca Rossetti, a young Italian guy who started just this year but has an incredible talent.
Our make-up is done by the fantastic artist, Elvira Vila.
What is a typical night at Pacha?
We all have a week’s schedule for when we have to be in. The rota changes so everyone is treated equally.
So let’s say this is Monday, so I have to be early in at 11:30 pm. When we arrive, we get make-up and the hair done. Nancy, who is responsible for all of us, makes the list of dance sets for the night: the first set starts at 1:30 am with the last finishing at 6 am.
Everyone gets four or five 20 minute sets over the night. In between the sets you can do whatever you want as long as you ready to do your next turn.
If I’m feeling up for a party I’ll go outside the dressing room to see my friends or make some new ones.
What do you love about being a Pacha dancer?
I love working at Pacha! We’re all are like a big family.
Pacha’s not like other clubs where you dance one year and the next, you’re swapped with a bunch of new girls.
At Pacha, everything is so well organized: the working hours, our appearance (make-up, clothing, and hair), in the dressing room everyone has their own chair and cupboard with their names on it.
Also the parties in Pacha are amazing, with great music and atmosphere. So all in all working becomes more of a pleasure.
How long do dancers usually stay on for and do you see yourself there in 5 years time?
Depends. Some girls have been dancing for more than nine years tat Pacha and some don‘t come back anymore after one season.
Personally I had my third season in Pacha this year and I am thinking to be back next summer again. Not sure what will happen later on, but I definitely do not see myself still working as a podium dancer in five years time!  

What is it like having to work all night?
I don’t get to see much of the summer as you work six times a week.
To work over the night means you have to sleep over the day.
I always try wake up early - which is not very easy - and hit the beach with friends or alone. I get to do most of my errands until I go to work, but I always keep in mind that afterwards, I have to go to work fresh, ready and full of energy.

You must have met some interesting and famous characters; who have you met at work?
Every year we get some famous people in the club. This year we had Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, Kelly Rowland, Naomi Campbell, Will.I.Am and Apl.de.ap from Black Eyed Peas, the list goes on.
But the most exciting point was meeting Dr. Dre. He’s a hip hop legend! Another thrilling experience was to meet Akon and be part of the ‘Sexy Chick’ video that also starred DJ David Guetta.
  Is there any time for romance or boyfriends?
(Smiling she says) The time you spend together would be very limited, as we only have one day off. But if you really fancy someone you can work around it…

What advice would you give to someone looking to work for the summer in the Ibiza club world?
Well if you are looking for work in a night club prepare yourself that most of the days you’ll spend sleeping, accommodation isn’t provided so you have that to think about, also you will have to deal with the fact that everyone is partying around you while you have to work, but if you really want it - be strong and go for it and you’ll succeed!

What time of the season do you recommend clubbers come to Ibiza?
August is the busiest month! Some nights gets so overcrowded that you have to squeeze through people and it feels as if you are in sauna. In August the temperature is the super hot as well. I recommend end of July and beginning of August.
The weather is great and you still do not have that much people on the island. Personally, the openings and closings parties/clubs are always very special and great fun.

Breakfast at Tiffany's darling?

After a long hot summer I'm back.
Thanks for the emails and comments requesting posts but I was indulging in sloth. High-end, luxurious sloth.

I could regal you with stories about St Tropez, getting lost in Ibiza, planes, trains and sexual automobiles but there's a recession going on... It wouldn't be right to flash my excess.

The 9th of September saw the first night opening of Breakfast at Tiffany's featuring a delightful blonde Anna Friel as Holly Golightly.
The auditorium was packed including booths, with a mixed audience of men and women. Some of the latter dressed in black dresses, pearls and Chanel bags. Not quite pulling off the chic simple look as populated by Ms Golightly with the help of Hubert De Givenchy.

The stage was resplendent in recreating the infamous set where the audience is sat as if inside Tiffany's, looking out onto the street, with the Tiffany blue square mirrored back to the stage.
As I sat down I was looking forward to seeing the famous scene where the central character strolls up to Tiffany's, munching on whatever it was she was popping, wearing the LBD and pearl ensemble-which was part of the dress, not a separate entity as some imitators think- and huge black sunglasses.
It wasn't shown but my disappointment soon moved to rapt enjoyment. The first two or three scenes were a little uncomfortable- nerves perhaps- for Anna Friel and Joesph Cross who plays William 'Fred' Parsons.

However they soon got into it with Miss Friel pulling off a great American accent sometimes marred with a touch of Lincolnshire English. All eyes were riveted as Friel, and Cross, appeared nude onstage numerous times. She embodies the role as Holly Golightly; the flighty vivacious Tinkerbell all women want to be and men want to possess, but I sometimes saw Audrey Hepburn in her acting.

The stage version sticks to the Truman Capote's book version but whether a fan of the film, this is a must-see play for both male and female.

Interview with Burlesque star Catherine D'Lish

Was it Dita Von Teese infiltrating the fashion pack that announced burlesque to the masses and creating an explosion of mediocre acts, who perhaps felt an affinity to the glamour and excitement of old school stripping.
Who was this creature? What does she do? What is burlesque? And why is she going out with Marylyn Manson?

The simmering arrival brought an avalanche of questions and intrigue.
Burlesque is universally known as a series of acts of parody, cabaret with the main attraction being a striptease or two.

I went to a burlesque show earlier this year at Raymond’s Revue bar that promised titillation, fun, glamour! The top billed ‘star’ was inept, unattractive and out of shape. I kept looking for the cameras, humouring my companion that it was a reality show called ‘Made’ by MTV, in which a person is given four weeks to train up into what they’ve always wanted to be.

I’m tired of these new unskilled wannabes gyrating awkwardly, fair skinned with vulgar tan lines. Or the overtly sexual ones, verging on porn, with no sensual seduction, possessing no actual sexual allure.

I caught Catherine D’lish at the Immodesty Blaize’s show at Koko in May this year. I had seen Ms Blaize in action four years before somewhere in Soho and had since been a fan of her thoroughly entertaining camp extravaganza.

Amongst the over top entertainment, including Marc Almond, one stood out.
Catherine D’lish undulated and seduced her way through her acts. Her finale, involving a martini glass and lots and lots of bubbles, brought the house down. Her style was polished and graceful, reminisct of Dita Von Teese.

Born and raised in San Diego with dreams of becoming a surgeon, Catherine first started out in burlesque after answering an advert as a teenager for nude dancers at a strip club.

“The strip club I started at was small, dark and seedy - I had never seen anyplace like it before. The club didn't care what kind of music you danced to, just as long as you played three songs.
To entertain myself I played all kinds of ridiculous music. Out of all the music I would dance to, my favorite songs to strip to were always the classic burlesque style pieces and that hasn't changed to this day.
It wasn't long after that I discovered the world of competitive stripping, and competing with classic striptease seemed perfect for me. I began making more elaborate costumes and props as I delved deeper and deeper into the world of stripping.
As I began collecting titles, I started to build a reputation for myself performing the classic burlesque-style striptease.”

You move gracefully and are flexible, were you trained in ballet?

"Thank you for the compliment. I was not trained in ballet, the way I move is a result of just hanging out with myself in front of a mirror and rehearsing in the mirror.
I'd spent years of my life studying music and horsemanship, so training and practicing were a way of life for me already- that's just what one does, isn't it?
I set up mirrored walls at home, and spent time stretching and practicing- I thought it was fun! I never did the dancing-in-front-of-the-mirror-singing-into-a-hairbrush thing as a younger girl, so I think this was my way of making up for lost time."

Your moves are in a league of their own, fluid, sensual and effortless, did you teach yourself or learn from a 'master'?

"All of that time spent in my home studio resulted in the way that I dance, and the things I do are just what I think work best with my particular body type. I spent hours of fun getting very groovy with some pretty entertaining music."

What are the good and bad sides of burlesque?

"I would have to say that my favorite thing about burlesque is the fun of putting a show together. I have a great time conceptualizing acts, designing props, doing the costumes, choreographing the numbers, it's a great hobby, and then to also have the enjoyment of performing it.
There are always shows-to-do-lists swimming around in my mind.
I like to travel, and always enjoy meeting new people.
I'd have to say that if there was a "bad side" of burlesque, it's that they have not all yet come to fruition! I have met many sweet and enthusiastic people in the ‘burlesque world’ and if there is any negative side to it, I don't let it interfere with my good time."

What made you branch out into costume design?

"When I first started stripping, I began making silly outfits to dance in. It was a great hobby. It still is!"

What do you think of people who see burlesque as merely stripping?

"It doesn't bother me at all if people blur the lines between what is perceived as ‘merely stripping’ and ‘burlesque.’
I've been doing basically the exact shows these days in beautiful theaters as I once did in the strip clubs so I'm definitely not one to hop on a soapbox and sanctimoniously proclaim the virtues of pure burlesque over the evils of the stripping world!
If you are looking for a definition of what burlesque is, or what the differences are between strippers and burlesque performers, I will happily steer you in another direction. There are many people that will happily pontificate on the subject, I will only under duress."

Do you feel a sexual tension between you and your audience?
"Um... yes... of course I do. It's very hot. H-O-T."

Where have you performed?

"I have been lucky enough to have performed across North America and Europe. There are still many countries to explore..."

Do you see anyone as your direct rival?

"Do you mean like a 'War of The Super Strippers'? No, I don't consider anybody as my "rival"..."

I saw DVT in Paris and I think you both have the same seductive feline moves, did you train together? How did you and DVT become friends or work partners? What do you think is the secret to her success?

"Dita and I met some time ago. I was working with a nightclub on their grand opening and invited her to come and perform.
I had a nasty knee injury (which sadly sidelined me for months), and as she quite liked my glass number, I plopped her into my glass and taught her the ‘moves’. We became pals and I began working with her on her shows and doing her costuming. That sort of thing seems to happen with any girl I spend time with!
The martini glass she uses was made to match my champagne glass, and we performed together a bit- a ‘dueling glasses’ act. I was there for years as her career took off and saw how one thing led to the next and again and again to higher levels of success.
She has always had a strong desire and determination to succeed that has served her well."

How did the connection with Immodesty Blaize come about and what do you think of her book, Tease?

"I received an email inviting me to perform in the Tease show in London this year and I was absolutely delighted to accept.
It was a fun-filled week working with a great group of entertainers and a live band, which can be the best, so that was part of the appeal for me.
I made some great new friends and we all enjoyed the experience. I have not read Immodesty's book, but I wish her great success with it."

Have you ever thought about writing or producing a book?

"I have been asked about this before, but I just don't think it's my time yet. Perhaps someday..."

What about workshops? And how come I didn't know about the workshop in London! I would have loved to go, same with anyone who attended the show after seeing you.

"I've been acting as a burlesque guidance counselor/ creative director/ costume designer/ choreographer/ coach for many ladies for so long now, that the segue into the workshops was just a natural progression.
I've been having a truly marvelous time with my new students and feel like a burlesque den mother now. It is really fun for me to travel and teach and I couldn't ask for nicer or more fabulous pupils."

Any spicy antidotes of ‘mad rich Russians’ wanting to sweep you off your feet and live happily ever fabulous in a Serbian castle?

"I am sorry to report that I have yet to have my feet swept out from under me but I like the idea!
I have met many "mad rich Russians", and many many mad/ not-so-mad and rich/not-so-rich potential suitors from different countries, but not the one..."

Are you always in character as Catherine D'Lish all the time?

"Well, yes- I am Catherine, and I don't see myself as a ‘character.’
It's just me.
All the time.
Whether I am on stage or not, I'm not the type to put on an act, although I generally keep my clothes on in public."

How do you think men like to see women dressed?

"There are many different types of men with many different kinds of taste in a woman's appearance. I think that the term ‘there is someone for everybody’ idea is based in reality.
I've heard men say that they think a woman looks best in an old t-shirt, is there really a guy that gets all hot and bothered by a baggy t-shirt? Then the world must be a wondrous place for him!
On a similar note, every woman has a different intention when she dresses herself.
I do quite like the notion of dressing to attract, of making irresistible bait out of oneself..."

Are you a natural red hair, why the change from blonde to red? It suits you by the way, sets you apart.

"Thank you for the compliment. I am a natural blonde, but have not had a natural hair color since I was a kid. I have always had a soft spot for redheads, so I suppose that had something to do with the transition to my appearance now. I have no desire to change it again, and I suspect that I will remain a redhead for a good, long time."

It doesn't look quite right for a burlesque star to have a 6-pack, what do you do to stay in shape?

"I don't think that I am in any danger of ever sporting a six-pack (or drinking one!)
Dancing and yoga are my preferred ways to exercise and I have a pretty healthy diet. Occasional recreational eating, but mostly I like to stick with fresh and nutritious food."

Have you had any plastic surgery to perhaps reach a certain aesthetic goal or would you rule it out?

"I am often asked whether my breasts have been surgically enhanced or not. They are home-grown, but I have sometimes thought that they could be improved upon and at one time seriously considered having them done.
I think I was influenced by the cartoons in Playboy I loved as a child. When I started to mature, I thought that my breasts were not as attractive as what I believed to be standard.
I found that I wasn't the only person that felt that way- I once had a stunning girl come up to me, saying that she couldn't/shouldn't/wouldn't expose her breasts on stage because they were freakish. Naturally curious (can you blame me?), I asked her to show them to me.
To my delight, she unveiled two of the most perfect breasts I have ever seen.
I told her:
"Of course they look weird to you, breasts that beautiful don't come along every day!"
It is strange and sad that very beautiful people can find themselves repulsive.
Back to plastic surgery, I've known people that have had it, and as a result, greatly improved their self-esteem. If it really makes a person feel better, and they go to a very good doctor, I can support it..."

Where can we find you nowadays?

"Nowadays, I am doing plenty of traveling to perform and teach. I will be in Europe doing shows for most of the rest of 2009. As for what I am up to, I am looking forward to developing some new shows for myself as soon as I possibly can!"

Having returned from St Tropez and seen a cheap ex-stripper (with crass prison tattoo's on her chest) turned millionaire's mistress, drip in diamonds whilst flaunting her sagging leathery 30-something year-old body by the Byblos pool... I have to write this.

For all you nouveau riche or wannabe nouveau riche listen up and take note; from Marbella to Miami, St Barths to St Tropez, the beach or pool is a time to have fun, catch jokes with friends, get that all important tan and chill.
We know, we totally get it. You have money now, Tiffany platinum buckets full but to avoid looking like the girlfriend of a Balkan state stealing thug, tone it down a touch and read below.

DO wear gold jewelery in moderation. Large gold hoops with a long thin gold chain will glisten against your oiled tanned skin and kaftan, heighting your haute hippe ensemble and making the men drool.
DO wear toe rings; now is the time to get away with it.
Keep it simple, your engagement and/or wedding ring is ok as is a small rock but NOTHING else.
If the strap marks don't bother you, DO wear a large masculine watch. It toughens up the girlish bikini flowing hair look.
Bracelets Rock: The Cartier string love bracelet, thin gold or coral coloured bracelets, an evil eye or/and whatever charity you are 'supporting' in the shape of a beaded bracelet.

DON'T wear all your jewelery at once; it's so painfully obvious to anyone and everyone that you are; insecure, obsess on how you are perceived by the real wealthy glossy posse, and, the worse, new money classless.
DON'T stack all your diamond tennis bracelets on one wrist. If you must, wear one on the same wrist as your watch.
Divorcee's, pro hunters and gold diggers; DON'T think, by flashing your gold Rolex Daytona and Graff rock, that the decrepit old man in the next sun lounger is going to find you attractive. Confident elegant gentlemen find that sort of thing a turn-off, keep it simple. It's only women who care about that kind of thing and we're not going to buy you that new £4000 Cavalli dress you saw for tonight's party, sweedie.

It's Ibiza Bitches!

Ibiza still reigns supreme as a summer party hot spot.
From the last weekend in May to mid September the blanca island plays host to dirty pretty things from across the world.

A 3-day jaunt can be squeezed in at the weekend by taking a late EasyJet flight from Stansted, Gatwick or Luton, arriving in Ibiza around 1am.
Clubs get going late so bouncing up around 2am is a standard occurrence.
It depends on your taste in music but Pacha on a Friday is de rigueur sweetie. Book the VIP section which sprawls over three floors with two bars, a table starts from €400. We bumped into Hollywood actor Cuba Gooding Jr and male supermodel Mark Vanderloo in the crowded elite section opening weekend.

Actually I kept bumping into Mr Vanderloo all weekend who has the blank expression of an extraordinarily good-looking alien who is used to being stared at. I was hoping he was stalking me. I doubt it.

During the day, if you can get up or want to carry on the party, there are a host of beach clubs to satisfy.
The Blue Marlin is a styled sophisticated beach club for a that exact clientele attracting the likes of CSI star Gary Dourdan and Chelsea footballer Frank Lampard, sick-rich hedge fund managers and model babes.
The only issue if you want to swim is the edge is surrounded by rocks so if that isn’t your thing then Salinas beach is.

Located near Playa en Bossa, Ses Salinas is the sand pit for the wealthy, beautiful and young. The best area is by the Jockey Club, any earlier than that and you're in nudist territory and having seen a 60 year-old man’s dick swinging while he asks for a lighter without batting an eyelash or a 25 year-old hippy type as she does yoga poses naked, you should listen to me.
The Jockey Club area has a restaurant where you can also order from on the beach. Expect sightings such as the DSquared designer twins, Dean and Dan Caton, with a gaggle of Brazilian teenage male models or that other Italian designer, Georgio Armani-you may have heard of him.

Saturday nights are great to take it easy at restaurants such as KM5 or El Ayoun, a party atmosphere Moroccan restaurant or go nuts at clubs such as Privilege and Amnesia.

Sunday Bloody Sunday reserve for Space! The opening weekend is based around Space and the annual opening of the popular club hosting over 5000 people at any one time. What do you like: minimal, electro beats? How about good old-fashioned soulful house? Space has it all with its multiple rooms including an outside terrace.
From 2009 the club will open at 12 midday instead of its usual 10am, the party rocks on till 8am the following day.
Personally, I like to go around 9pm: the atmosphere is heated up, the over achievers have already been carted out of the club and the pretty men are out in full force. Mark Vanderloo I see you!

Don’t worry about being in VIP, it is better to have a regular ticket and have the freedom to walk around.

The number hotel on the island remains the Ibiza Gran Hotel. The only chic 5 star hotel with all amenities.

Footy4Females-Does exactly what it says on the tin.

For the longest time I had been half-heartedly searching for a female football team to play for fun.

I was all but laughed out of my local gym for attempting to join the men’s team so imagine my joy to hear about a non-competitive women’s football league.

Footy4Females is a social 5 a-side football league in Chelsea. It takes place weekly at the pitches on the corner of Sydney Street and Cale Street, opposite St Lukes Church.

A league lasts nine weeks and they play all year round. With dreams of playing for Chelsea FC instead of dating a superstar footballer, I went along.

On arrival I was pleased to find all types of women there: a bubbly blonde Essex bird, a 50 year-old woman and a robust Kiwi chick were among the many, the latter being in my team; Victoria Vikings.

There are three game times lasting 40 minutes with two teams playing against each other.
All levels are welcome thank god; the last time I played was on a beach in Spain and there was a third sangria in my hand. I say no more.

My competitive aggressive side came out in full force and I loved it! I screamed abuse at the referee for allowing a goal. I roughly tackled the opposition on more than one occasion and I yelled ‘encouragement’ at my fellow teammates from the sidelines.

That bubbly sweet blonde I mentioned earlier; a competitive goal-hungry sports freak. The 50 year-old woman? A god in goal. And the Kiwi? Let’s not mention her.

All in all a fun and social way to get fit, meet and make new friends as well as an excellent stress reliever.

These guys breezed into Chanel, Rue Cambon, no less and caused a fuss.
I loved that they were in Chanel, a highly sophisticated but mildly frumpy boutique and there they were; fresh, dynamic and rocking what's happening right now.
I was openly staring and coveting their New York style and a security guard were 'discreetly' following the pair as they browsed nonchalantly checking out the latest.

I wanted to scream; they could be your boss in five years time and thugs don't have the skill to look that stylish. Well some- the Cammora do look rather dashing when people aren't being slain.
Who are these designers they mention? Why haven't I heard of them?

These guys looked fresh to death. Even the way they are standing, especially Martin, is so NYC late 90's (there's a singer I'm thinking of.. the thin one from PM Dawn????) I could cry and give him an Elle style award.

The black beads on Maurice's neck.. Who does that? What man rocks that? But he does it so well you wonder why you haven't done it yourself.

Immodesty Blaize and the Fantastic 8!

For those who do not know who Immodesty Blaize is she is Britain's answer to Dita Von Teese. Although not as polished and delightedly seductive as Dita, Miss Blaize knows how to put on a show.
She opened the finale show last night at Koko in Camden in a blaze of feathers, rhinestones and curvaceous flesh.

The show that Camden authorities struggled to ban was here in full glory.

Julian Clary, camp MC extraordinaire, kept the audience laughing as he introduced each act; Marc Almond, the Glitter Boys- a comical yet utterly entertaining dance troupe and among others, the inimitable Catherine D'Lish.
Admittedly I was more enthralled with Miss D'Lish- elegantly seductive as she pouted and undulated on stage. The crowd went wild when she lowered herself into a martini glass and splashed around, because boys, that's what women do when they're alone.
Red hair softly curled against her pale white skin with knowing playful eyes, she truly is a femme fatal.
Although an older lady, she is the kind of woman you don't leave around your lover or husband. Her body is immaculate, surely honed from ballet or yoga, every move is graceful and sensual. Her face, beautiful.
The kind of woman who turns men- and women- to jelly.
She makes exquisite corsets and burlesque show items for the elite burlesque dancers, among them, Dita Von Teese who also used to be her dance partner.

Immodesty B is not as graceful and streamlined as Miss D'Lish but for the little she lacks, she makes up for in pure theatrical show. Her props and costumes are spectacular, although her presence is not as commanding as I would have liked, you still can't take your eyes off her. The horse show was her best that night, wearing a head dress with a plume of red ostrich feathers, she faux whipped her two dancers as they whinnied on all fours. The show ended with her astride her rhinestone encrusted rocking horse. Fantastic.
She looks like a young Sophia Loren with all the sexual magnetism.

Tyson-The Movie. Out on DVD

If you didn't see this surprising gem of a film when it came out in April I insist you get yourself down to Harrods and pick up the newly released DVD.
I never thought words such as heartwarming and sympathy would be used in the same sentence as Mike Tyson; a man who, you would think, belongs in the belly of a raging psychotic beast.

Running nearly two hours long, the documentary biopic exposes Tyson's vulnerable yet ferocious- and there really is no other way to describe Mike Tyson- side.
The ex-heavy weight champ breaks down as he reveals how his 'father figure' trainer, Gus D'Amato, died when Tyson was 19 years-old. The man he credits for shaping his life.
He also reveals the method to his madness when he bit Evander Holyfield's ears off during that memorable second revenge fight that saw Tyson disqualifed and a brawl breaking out in the ring.

Funny, sad, intriguing and surprisingly articulate, this no holds barred documentary depicts Tyson in a way the public have never seen. He talks to the camera as if talking to psychiatrist; his words rush out, he contemplates things and is emotional.

This really is a must see film, brilliant in most places. My only irritation is the split screen that comes up several times during the film and the over lapping of his voice. It is distracting and tries to create - a false- entry into the mind of a self-confessed mad-man.

I have just finished reading the best copy Vogue has ever put out. Period. Eclipsing Italian 'All Black' Vogue issue. By far.
I soon as I saw the three models-Liya Kebede, Natalia V and some unknown model but instantaneously recognisable face I was hmmm, this could be entertaining.

I rarely buy US Vogue, perhaps if I'm about to embark on yet another long distance flight or I've read every other worthwhile one on the shelves, but there was something about this copy.
Perhaps it was the Real Lives of Models-Boyfriends, Babies, Closets etc that accompanied it made me stealthy steal it from my gym.

I read every word from cover to cover. There wasn't even the multitude of advertisements to jar me, just the interview with the infamous Steven Meisel -if you don't know do your homework right now or I'm not talking to you- Natalia V taking on the persona's of the most recognisable supermodels in the past few decades, which she does intimidatingly well, to Noami Campbell's new life as a mistress to a Russian billionaire property developer- come on did she have private planes and bodyguards accompany her everywhere before? Nope. Does she go for any man worth less than a few hundred million? Probably not but the article is still interesting and we learn new facts about her and what's up and coming.
Model Karlie Kloss admission about being hurt by sharp comments about her being skinny did make me want to strike her. Hard. Across the face. Repeatedly. She sounds like one of those girls who talk too much after taking cocaina.
The May issue is clearly to support Vogue's partnership with the Metropolitan Musuem of Art, the theme being 'Model as Muse' which editor Anna Wintour chairs.
There is a great shot of Kate Moss with Marc Jacobs circling one arm around her legs as she reclines against Justin Timberlake- yes i also wondered what he was doing there.

The best copy ever, I guarantee it, I put money on it. Buy it.

Watch out Carine, Ms Wintour is at your heels.

Dover Street Market is an interesting concept, similar to Colette Paris and Patricia Fields NYC.
A mix of hunted high-end fashion, the healthiest stock of Alaia in London with heavy weight vintage by famed Decades in LA.

On entry I’m not quite sure if this is an art space. Greeting you is a glass cabinet stacked with skulls and to my left a table groaning with old antique books. DSM is founded and directed by Comme Des Garcon’s Rei Kawakubo, the ground floor boasts an array of startling talented designers like Junya Wantanube and Charlotte Olympia.

Each floor blew me away with its stylish ideas.
The basement set out like a NYC basement thrift store was hard to beat but the third floor was impressive. A mannequin with a Marie Antoinette style coiffure decked out in completely modern clothes dominates the room. Perching on an opulent ruby red sofa as if beckoning servants with luxurious candles and parfum bottles behind on display. Sumptuous garments from Lanvin are casually placed behind Madame Pompadour in a manner suggesting this is her abode. Random empty white drawers lie around on the floor full of books and vintage style lingerie. Each corner is different from the rest. The vintage by Decades, too precious to be with Givenchy, is given its own nook. Curiously puzzling is the abundance of animal skulls and bear heads for sale nestling with the big hitters such as Galliano, L’Wren Scott and Pierre Hardy.
DSM will provoke a strong opinion. Unique fashion concept or an intimidating, uber trendy boutique?
There is something here for everyone, if you can afford it.

I now know when ever I say I hate something, in actual fact I love it.

I hated his slow over privileged drawl, his patronising sneer, his slightly greasy hair to match his overly sleazy nature, his self loathing mixed with unabashed arrogance, the way he abuses his money and the way he reigns supreme in the rarefied world of moneied teens in Manhattan's Upper East Side.

He's a better villian than Spencer Pratt from The Hills, cutting comments delivered in that irritating accent and sneaky underhand tactics.

I don't want to see British actor, Ed Westwick, smile or be nice on the red carpet or in real life. I want him to be a moody, mean fucker. Almost like a teenage Dr Troy from Nip/Tuck, always handy with the quick quip.
So greasy and gross with money and status being the only thing that truly lands him girls; he reminds me of that other real life greasy, sweaty society boy from an affluent New York family. I'll give you two hints: He dated Mischa Barton and called Lindsey Lohan a 'fire crotch'. Classy.

Jalouse is a dirty sexy secret. It’s one of those clubs that may be private but it has sex appeal.

It opened in the rumblings of the credit crunch and has so far survived the recession with a glamorous party-hungry international crowd packing it out on a nightly basis.
Tucked away in the corner of Hanover Square, the décor is similar to Crystal curtsey of interior designer Mark Humphrey.
Large diamond shaped crystals hang from the ceiling (so secure you can hang from them, yes I tried after too much vodka) against a sleek dark background.

Leonardo DiCaprio loves it so much he makes a point to go every time he is in London, sitting with the owners in VIP like a smug A-list prince. Others like Sienna Miller and Josh Harnett have passed through its doors.

Bare in mind this is a private members club- aren’t they all-but it’s easily accessible by guest-list. Promoters do their thing during the week but it’s Friday and Saturday nights that are the big draw and exclusively managed by Jalouse.

The men are tall dark and handsome, the women are glammed to an inch of their Christian Louboutin Prive and Herve Leger lives and the mixed up-to-the minute music gets people bopping.
Everyone is smiling, drinking and generally having fun. It exudes that star studded St Tropez/Miami party vibe from the moment you walk in.

The Prince’s of Wales favourite new hotspot Whisky Mist has dominated the London club scene since it opened in a blaze of glory in 2008.

Attached to the Hilton hotel and formally Zeta bar it’s a popular haunt of the young royals, drawing big names such as George Clooney, Jason Statham and Christina Aguilera.

Apparently geared to the now defunct wealthy bankers and hedge funders, Whisky Mist is actually the opposite. Different nights vary but go on a weekend and bump into sullen young Lily Allen types. Emphasis on young.
For me Thursday is the best night, a beautiful mixed mingle of actors, musicians, models and wannabes come in droves.

The owners, Mahiki’s Piers Adam and club king Nick House have worked their magic into making this place a must destination. Nick House has reportedly said: “A certain type of person goes out in Park Lane. Whisky Mist is between China Tang and Nobu. The location is almost a statement."
Err ok Nick although he could be right. A great time can be had here for sure. It sometimes has an international understated crowd all up for a party but mainly full of young Sloaney types.

The music varies from excellent house to chart R&B and everything in-between to get you throwing moves on the dance floor.
So does the dress code, there isn’t one.

Top tip: VIP VIP VIP. That little enclosed room to the left as you walk in, which I thought was actually the entire club it’s so spacious, hosts a high concentration of royals, A-listers and the well connected. The other room is boring compared so make sure you book VIP!
Also the vanilla martini’s are not on the menu but my god they’re good.

Model turned DJ isn’t something you hear everyday but Playboy model Kellie Arceman amongst others is turning that notion on its head.
Coupled with that other gorgeous famous mens-mag favourite, Lauren Pope-her best friend from Devon, the two are taking London nightlife by storm by playing at exclusive clubs and parties.
Turning heads with her glamour model uniform of huge blonde tresses, bodacious boobies and bopping heads with her skilled hands Kellie is part of the new wave of talented model female DJ’s shoving their way through the male dominated field.
Self taught and in the music game for only a year Kellie was nervous about playing to the masses. “It took a long time to get me to the level where I’d be confident enough to play out to clubs but I had a lot of fun learning and downloading all my music. I’m a huge house fan and now I have a massive collection.”
Tag teaming with partner Lauren, who feeds the R&B crew while Kellie panders to the House heads, gets them A LOT of attention. “I do get quite a lot of attention but it’s mainly from guys who can’t believe I’m about to get behind the decks and be able to mix! Girls can DJ as well as guys believe it or not!”

Wigan born DJ Miss Mavrik, Claire Griffiths, started spinning House tracks four years ago after modeling for 10 years.
Having featured in films such as "How to Lose Friends and Alienate People" and starred in campaigns for big business brands like beer giant Guinness in which she was flown to South Africa for a week, Griffiths was keener on her TV presenter at GMTV which saw her interviewing bands and talking about music to the masses.
"I really enjoyed that. I do have a love for presenting but I didn't get the same buzz as I do from getting up there and playing the tunes I love."

She started her DJ career by accident at Planet Hollywood in London after a DJ friend urgently needed her to cover for him.
"Of all places Planet Hollywood and I'd never played out before but he was like; "its cool you don't have to mix, just cross fade", so I went along.
I had always collected all sorts of music so I took along all of my own music. I was super nervous but it all turned out to be good in the end. By the time I finished playing people were coming over to congratulate me saying how much they'd enjoyed my set. Apparently my friend had been playing Abba and 50's rock and roll so I guess my Red Hot Chili Peppers and Prodigy tracks went down a storm."

Happy with the successful night Griffiths decided there and then this is what she wanted to do.
"I went home and thought why the hell have I never done this before. I had collected all sorts of house tunes for over 12 years so getting decks and learning to mix was the next step, which was a nightmare!
I no idea what I was doing and it would drive me crazy. Some days I would just look at them in my room because I couldn't mix and it was so frustrating."

After six months of teaching herself to mix the next step was house music mecca Ibiza but it wasn't easy.
"The trip nearly killed me. My mixing was crap but I didn't care or maybe I didn't realise just how much I had to learn. I went alone with my suitcase, pestering every bar/club venue and eventually got a residency. Three months later I was still out there playing most nights and having lots of fun."

With her statuesque body and wild mass of curly locks it's fair to say Miss Mavrik gets her fair share of interest when DJing.
"I would be lying if I didn't admit to meeting some damn cute boys from behind the decks".
Laughing she adds: "I suppose it's pretty credible having a cool female playing at your night. I'd rather be known as Miss Mavrik the girl who can play rather than Miss Mavrik the DJ who looks half good but cant play."

This seems to remind her of a bad gig she played where the promoter obviously didn’t know her style of music and was perhaps distracted by her looks.
“The worst venue I played at was a few seasons ago where I’d been placed in a big venue over the Christmas period and whoever booked me obviously hadn’t got to grips with what sort of music I played. My god I wanted the floor to open up and eat me alive!” She squealed.
“Its really hard to turn a crowd around when you don’t have the tunes they want. What ever you put on isn’t going to work and I don’t really play chart music. Put it like this: The DJ who had been on before me finished his set with George Michael’s last Christmas. At this point I began to shit myself. So yeah, I guess that set didn’t go down to well that time.”

During the summer Mavrik can normally be found at the hot club spots all over the world like Ibiza, St Tropez, Istanbul and Rome. Luckily for Italians and Londoners she has just started a residency with The Hoxton Rebelz in London and at Spazio 900 this year.

Welcome to 2009 and what better way to kick start the year by injecting glamour, style and sunshine by blogging about St Barths!

Ahh St Barthelemy: The beautiful glamorous French Caribbean island where the jet-set and the beautiful collide in a chic laid back environment.
If you are going to do St Barths, do it right and follow my guide; no mishaps, no lost luggage, no fashion no nos.

Do come at the right time. From Thanksgiving through to January is high season particularly from the 30th December up to mid January where many arrive in droves by yacht and private jet. Then again from February to April.

Do go to Eden Rock or Nikki Beach for lunch and/or dinner: It’s a breeding ground for high profile celebrities and glamorous fabulous people.

Don’t crane your neck or stare when you see A list stars such as Daniel Craig, Russell Simmons, Richard Gere and designers Marc Jacobs and Georgio Armani having dinner there. (On Christmas day I might add, MJ looking totally hot!) You're too cool for that and plus you are also a star: They’re just not sure where they recognise you. So cultivate that.

Do go for dinner at Ti St Barths (Carole’s Place) in Mont Jean. A lively fun filled place reminiscent of St Tropez’s Villa Romana. Owned by “The Queen of Cool” Carole Gruson, this place is a great party place or pre warm up, DJ’s come in from all over the world playing beats you HAVE to dance to, by your table or in between. Check out her Johnny Depp look-a-like toy boy.

Do book minimum six months in advance. Hotels normally take repeat bookings from clients the year before so get in there quick! You’ll be put on a waiting list. If you haven’t booked a year or two in advance; forget Eden Rock. The hotel is number one on the island but sophisticated and stylish Le Sereno is at its heels as is the reliable and chic St Barth Isle de France or the Guanahani hotel and Clarins spa.

As a first timer do stay in a hotel. You’ll learn the island, be collected from the airport and whisked to a cool haven. Concierge will book everything for you from hot restaurants to buying electric mosquito killers.

Don’t use sweet body lotions or butters: Mosquito’s will be all over your ass, literally like a rash.

This is the time to be beach glamorous so do pack your best kaftans, thong sandals, gold accessories and dresses.

Don’t fly with the unreliable WinAir/Windward. You’ll regret it when your luggage turns up a few days later with no explanation. The aircrafts are tiny.
Only way to fly is private dahling. Failing that, St Barths Commuter. Slightly more expensive but worth the peace of mind.
Also the airport closes at 17.15, sharp! No exceptions as it's too dark to fly in. If your flight is late into St Maarten or Agullia you can get the ferry, look online, the last ferry is usually 18.45. Failing that, you can hire a private boat to bring you in. From €1000 for six people.

Do check out the ridiculously expensive boutiques such as Vanita Rose just to marvel at the cheek of it although she does stock some beautiful pieces.
The owner is a fashion and beauty obsessed ex Parisian model, beautifully man made and blonde. Don’t you just love that kind?
A baby Louis Vuitton denim monogrammed bag lies on the shelf looking mildly faux with an asking price of 865 euros. In Louis Vuitton last year it was two hundred less than this but hey: It’s St Barths!
Unlike the rest of the economically savvy world, there is no sale in St Barths.
I was met with a bemused smile when I tried to get a discount in Human Steps on a pair of new season Christian Louboutin wedges and YSL Tributes.

Do not drink and drive. Nope not even one. Ok perhaps half but no Mai Tai’s! That rum will kick in before you can say ambulance. The roads are precariously tiny and broken with no barriers that could see you falling off the cliff into the ocean or onto some poor islander’s house.

Don’t worry about not having enough clothes, in Gustavia, the harbour, all the designer shops are waiting to cater to you and your fellow rich bitches.
Elena, in St Jean, is great for lingerie and swimsuits, Human Steps and Calypso in Gustavia have a great selection of current designer goods, Edgar is a must for men where Dsquared and Galliano threads can be found. Then drag him to Louis Vuitton next door or if you’re really brave and adventurous: Jewellers De Grisogono. Cavalli is further down off the main road. Birkin bags are actually available in Hermes here but be prepared to pay.

Beauty salon Venus in Gustavia is owned by the softly spoken Ann who has been a St Barths resident for 18 years. You can get anything done there from an all off Hollywood wax to a male anti aging facial and complete with foot massage.

Model Mayhem

Spotted when she was only 13 years old in her local shopping mall, British born model, Asha Leo has become a successful commercial model starring in numerous worldwide campaigns such as Pepsi Raw and Nivea.
You may have seen her pouting prettily out from the front cover of a glossy magazine, or perhaps showed you how to get great skin on TV courtesy of beauty company Simple.
A difficult woman to track down, when I contacted her initially she was about to start a multi city trip including LA and Africa in 12 days. We can safely say Ms Leo is a hot commodity in the modelling industry and after 13 years in the business, is still going strong.

It is every girls dream to be scouted by a model agency especially one as prestigious as Select who wanted to sign Asha immediately but her parents was not so sure.
“Initially my parents were against the offer. I was raised in a family where education came first, and also knowing nothing about the industry; we weren’t even sure that the offer was genuine and not a scam! Completely randomly, the girl who answered the phone when my mother called the agency happened to have studied in the same school which comforted my mother.”

Signed in that week work soon followed: Editorials and runway are the norm for young teenage girls starting in the industry. Their smooth unlined faces are perfect for make up and their naturally slim innocently gangly bodies, narrow hips and pert breasts bode perfectly for clothes.
With her mixed parentage of Indian and Welsh her exotic looks landed Asha editorials, runway and lingerie bookings.
“I am more a commercial model now, which I am happy about as it pays much more. The majority of bookings I get now are campaigns”.
Indeed, modeling for leading brands such as Pretty Polly, Adidas, Head and Shoulders are not to be sniffed at.

After spending six years with Select Asha jumped ship in 2001 to Nevs model management, known for their carefully selected cattle of fashion and commercial models, after developing a more “womanly shape”.

I asked if she ever felt pressure to stay slim, in a world where size 0 is fabulous whether you are a strong person or not it can be difficult not to be influenced by ones surroundings. Peers, the environment one keeps and of course the agency have a strong impact even people’s perceptions of you can take its toll.
“As I am not an editorial model it doesn’t effect me that much, but in particular markets such as New York, Paris and Tokyo there is more pressure to stay slim. I have never encountered it but in Paris and Tokyo the models have weekly weigh-ins.”
She adds diplomatically: “I have a better relationship with Nevs than I did Select but I think that is mainly because I am an adult now and much more confident.
Sure there is pressure to maintain your looks but in this industry; my face, skin, hair, body are the tools of my trade. Ensuring that I look well is investing in my career.”

So you must be down the gym sweating everyday with the rest of us mere mortals?
“You'll hate me. I haven't actually been to a gym since 2006. I've paid to go to one for year… Does that count?”
Smiling she adds:” I've been blessed with a good metabolism and I am a naturally active person throughout the day: Casting in New York means I'm walking miles everyday, normally in 5inch Louboutin’s or cycling on my bicycle dodging traffic.
I do also have my eye out on some classes like Bikram yoga and Hip Hop classes.
I hate fad diets but my rule is: A little, often.”

In 2007 it was reported Gisele famously started to request her fees be paid in euros as, back then, it was strong against the dollar.
Asha moved to New York in 2007 why the change I asked.
“Now that I have finished my degree I decided to move to New York, for work and personal reasons. I used to work here in 2006 and loved it so I was looking forward to moving back. The difference in pay is just that you now earn dollars but with a rapidly changing economic situation, the rate of exchange now means it’s not too weak against the pound.

I don’t mind which city I work in. I have agencies in: Milan, Paris, Hamburg, Amsterdam, Israel, Dubai, Miami and Barcelona. It’s just preferable to be making the most out of your money, which is directly related to where the pound is sitting against the Euro or dollar.
Modeling has allowed me to be financially self-sufficient from a young age and I’ve been able to invest in property early on.”

Reflecting on her career Asha adds: “The greatest thing about modeling is that I have traveled the world and experienced so much in life.
It seems almost every week I am in another exotic location. I have a tradition that I started 5 years ago; every time I visit a new place I buy a fridge magnet showing the cities name.
Back home in London I have ran out of room on my double sized American fridge!
It is a great reminder of the places that I have been to, and shows me how lucky I am to have traveled the world and been paid for the pleasure.”

The life of a successful model sounds great, when can we sign up? Just before we do, what is the worst part, it can’t be all up and positive.
Laughing she says: “The traveling is the best and worst part of the job! I love seeing so much of the world but long haul flights, back-to-back trips in different time zones and nights alone in hotel rooms can prove to be very lonely. I have a record of 37 flights in nine weeks! That much stress can be hard on your body and thoroughly exhausting when you can be in New York on Monday, London on Tuesday, Paris on Wednesday and Dubai on Thursday, it is exciting but also hard work.”

Ahh, I knew there was a catch.

Modeling, like football, has a short lifespan and many models have gone the tried and tested route of becoming an actress. Some get it right like Charlize Theron, Sienna Miller and Rebecca Romain-Stamos and some get it painfully wrong like Naomi Campbell and Cindy Crawford.
“I have no desire to go down that road.” Asha says laughing.
“My parents ensured that our education always came first. I recently completed a degree in Journalism, Broadcast and Public Relations. While I am fortunate to still be modeling 13 years on I know that I have the ability to enter into another vocation when I choose to later on in life.”

Although it sounds like a dream job there are pitfalls: Predatory men in the industry preying on young girls, drugs, long hours and travelling to foreign cities alone.
Karen Mulder, one of the original supermodels from the nineties, accused the owner of Elite model management, a member of a royal family as well as people from her immediate entourage in 2001 of rape. According to Vogue she revealed the shocking story in an interview set for TV in which she fled the set in tears after her revelation. The interview never made it live after people close to her murmured their concerns over her mental state.
I asked Asha, if in the future, she would ever let her child follow her footsteps.
She replied: “I’m unsure whether I would let my child model, I see so many girls get wrapped up in it all and tail spin wildly out of control.
It is a short working life and can be a very challenging and scary industry. Luckily for me I had incredible grounding from my mother, I was reminded that education was important and she accompanied me on all my shoots till I was 17. She was my voice when I was too shy to have one. My mother helped keep my feet on the floor and kept me grounded.”

Her advice to aspiring models and parents unsure about the industry is: “Educate yourself. It’s very rare to have longevity in this career so prepare yourself for jobs in other industries by also studying.
Keep yourself healthy, it reflects in your eyes and skin, and never feel pressured to diet or indulge in other harmful things.
Always sign with a trusted agency that has been recognised by the AMA.
And enjoy yourself, as it is one of the best jobs in the world!”

Shhh... It's Silent Disco

North London hot spot, The Hill, will introduce London's first ever 'Silent Disco' to its clubbers this Thursday.

Originally from the Netherlands silent disco or clubbing was introduced when clubs could not get a late license for music. Instead they gave each clubber a set of headphones with two channels to alternate between different DJ's playing different music.

The one off special event held Thursday 18th December in Muswell Hill is strictly for 250 people due to the number of wireless headphones available.

A Silent Disco is a new and unique concept sweeping the UK that gets rid of traditional speaker systems used in nightclubs or festivals.

The Hill will give everyone a set of their wireless headphones to listen to the music and then have two DJ's playing simultaneously on two separate channels, meaning you’re in control of the music that you want to hear!

You must have heard of Hotel Costes either through word of hushed mouth, its ambient mix cds or in various fashion pages.
It is a pocket-sized hotel big on personality and stature.
Set on Rue du Faubourg St. Honoré, its opulent and gothic luxe décor still lures in the fashion and jet set crowd into the boutique hotel after 17 years in business.
The courtyard is a beautiful buzzing haven especially during fashion week where the air becomes thick with smoke but an excellent stop with friends for brunch or a late lunch.
The bar and restaurant inside is slightly too dark but romantic with deep velvet burgundy drapes and wooden chairs reminiscent of Moulin Rouge when it was chic.
The 85 Michelin rated rooms are Goth meets French bordello inspired with deep dark colours and muted lighting so a small room can make you feel hemmed in.
Everyone, including the maid, is beautiful, stylish and artfully sullen so perfect your pouts and don’t take offence to being ignored by the staff.
Great place to people watch.

Without hesitation or question the Four Seasons George V is essence of luxury and is THE 5 star hotel in Paris.
A great story that summarises this hotel in a nutshell is when a friend drove 4 hours from London, pulled up outside the hotel at 11pm at night in his Lamborghini Gallardo rumpled and scruffy then asked for a room with no reservation. Okay; perhaps the car was a nice touch and had him ushered swiftly into the hotel like a king but the truth is; the attentive staff have impeccable manners and far from being elitist will treat you like royalty.

Set in the 8th arrondesment the grand high-end hotel, furnished with exquisite objets de art and antiques, is a stones throw from Champs-Elysées. The décor is very Louis XVI resulting in high ceilings and opulent design.
Their elegant lounge, The Galerie, is a great anytime of the day for drinks or even a coffee especially at 3pm when the pianist plays.
Le Cinq is their formal restaurant awarded two Michelin stars in its first year. The restaurant requires smart dress and is always booked weeks in advance so get in there quick.
Neither stuffy nor arrogant the G5 is the beautiful refined younger sister to The Crillion. How can you not love a hotel that is directly opposite Louis Vuitton and practically on Champs-Elysee?

Top Tip: Book a chauffeur to meet you at Gare de Nord or the airport. It makes the trip just that little bit more special.

It was a strictly invite basis and thank god I got there at 8am, by the time I left two or three hours later there was a queue stretching a hundred yards up the road.

There is something for everyone: From punky Balmain tuxedos to phython skin Michael Kors bags. Even former UK Vogue editor Elizabeth Saltzman was there grappling with the bulging rails.
The only down-side is the no changing rooms and distinct lack of mirrors. Three at my last count.

Fashion Feature- 'When I grow up mummy I want to be a model"

Modeling is a dream for many young girls across the world. Just look at the highly rated and syndicated show ‘America’s Next Top Model.’ To have the public masses approve and ‘professionals’ such as bookers and photographers validate ones beauty is now the norm. There is nothing wrong in aspiring to that lifestyle, every girl, every woman should have excitement and glamour in her life but modeling isn’t just about that. It’s a business and a lifestyle. It’s not just about losing 10kgs then rocking up to ICM thinking there’s a chance to be had. Yes some weight may have to be lost but the body must be toned and maintained. A model is merely a ‘hanger’ for the clothes, while she or he must be beautiful with a great yoga honed body, the focus on the runway and print is the fashion. The model speaks the language the designer or brand is trying to convey.

For example the current Michael Kors print campaign as top fashion model Carmen Kass with a whippet thin body, slicked back hair and a gorgeous Mad Men-esque husband by her side as they pose nonchantly aboard their yacht. An illusion that speaks to the right people and makes others covet.

As a model the skin has to be clear with no imperfections, hair in excellent condition and well groomed nails. This alone is not enough, the look has to be what agencies and clients are looking for. You may be beautiful and glamazon like but what if quirky is in right now?

Look online, Facebook and MySpace profiles are rampant with wannabe glamour models in studied come hither poses wearing scantily clad clothing, big hair and too much make up. Some have it, most don’t; they’re just pretty girls with nothing extraordinary or beyond commercial. It seems nowadays any one can become a model. Just go to Topshop on a Saturday afternoon, outside the flagship store male ‘scouts’ approach teenagers with the opening line: “Have you ever thought about becoming a model?” and the girls gobble it up not realising, when you cut the sales talk and swagger, these men are actually selling photo shoots where you will be charged for the all important 8 by 10's.
Some are successful in the field of modeling and can make a great career from it. By far commercial modeling is the most stable and long lasting in all genres.

Muriel Andurand started her career age 16 years old in 1992 after winning an Elite Model competition in Paris. In an era where supermodels ruled, the likes of Cindy Crawford and Linda Evangelista hit the scene with such a force they were crowned the new rock stars by a US publication.
A tomboy at heart she said: “ I was a swimmer, a student, a young girl who did not specifically dream about super models but more about an Olympic medal”.
After beating 3000 girls to win a car and an all-exclusive contract with Elite, she left home and was soon pounding the streets of Paris, London and New York looking for work.
Muriel, even 16 years later, is a statuesque beauty with a mass of curly brown hair, cat like green eyes and a confident ease. Bearing a striking resemblance to a famous American actress, Elite used that advantage and sold her as such.

“They marketed me as Andy MacDowell’s little sister, as their mermaid, they pushed me in all the right and wrong directions. I slept in models’ flats with eight other girls from different nationalities. Food was often stolen from the fridge, sometimes my clothes as well. Girls came and went all hoping to make it big and most of the time, just making it home. Like Sinatra said: ’If you can make here you can make it anywhere’.
I was lucky to have a good education and loving parents backing me up but for the ones who didn’t have that background, they probably had grimmer futures”.
In the world of modeling anorexia is rife and bulimia runs rampant especially in fashion and commercial. In November 2006 21 year old Brazilian model Ana Carolina Reston died weighing just 40 kilograms being the second model that year to succumb to the pressures of being in a competitive industry where youth and looks are king. Her death prompted officials at Madrid fashion week to ban under weight models and Georgio Armani urging fellow designers to stop using ultra thin models.
The 33 year old ex model says: “These things are not a cliché, they are a reality. I once knew a beautiful Israeli girl who was making far more money than all of us with the German market. She was not as skinny as the agency would have hoped so they gave her the address of a pharmacist they worked closely with in order to prescribe her weight loss tablets. She realised away on a trip that she did not feel so good without her prescription. The girl was on cocaine without even knowing. Her agency had made her sign a five-year contract whilst she was barely lucid. They took everything from her and when I saw her years later, she had lost her sparkle.

Modeling was great, it was tough and it made me the person I am but I had to fight really hard to keep my sanity, not to become anorexic or bulimic. I was doing commercial work because I was never skinny. I was a former swimmer with broad shoulders and weigh loss would never have trimmed my shoulders!
Talking about banning girls who are too skinny won’t work; it’s a marketing coup. Who had ever heard of the Madrid show before they started banning skinny girls from the runway? No one.

Weight was not as important as it is now. Gianni Versace liked the girls with tits and ass to put it bluntly. He himself was an elegant man. Designers today want the models to look as unhealthy as they do. They don’t like women in the same way as the older designers did. Models have become a tool, a hanger, simply disposable.”

Models have always been an allure and must have for rich powerful men in whatever industry: Donald Trump and Melania Knauss, Stephanie Seymour and Axl Rose, Gisele and Leonardo DiCaprio hell even Carla Bruni and the French President Nicolas Sarkozy! To have the women known for their beauty and desired worldwide is something of a massage for the ego.

One New York based investment banker says: “ Once you get used to frequenting or hanging out with models you realise you don’t want anything else.” The 31 year old adds: “Sure it sounds shallow but I don’t want to date a regular girl: I want a girl who will be the envy of my friends with long legs and a small butt. I don’t care if she’s dumb, she’s only going to be replaced when something better comes along”. When I asked if that meant younger he just winks and laughs.
Muriel knows all about these kind of guys dubbed by author Michael Gross as ‘modelisers’.
“I was living in a different planet. I didn’t work every day and was making a lot of money. I mostly lived in Paris, and made the most of my youth and of the fantastic places I had access to just thanks to my label “model”.
Men would be attracted to me just for what I represented not for who I was. They say women are attracted to men with money and power but I realised then men could be as well. In the past centuries, women were not given the chance to have power or money so the question was never raised but in this industry you make far more money as a female model than a male model. It’s a fantasy for a lot of people. You become desired and wanted, you may toy with it or not you can decide, you’re in power.”
The 17 year old up and coming fashion model Chanel Iman was recently quoted as saying: "Flirting? I don’t flirt, they flirt with me”.

Muriel said: “I have many anecdotes even spicier because of who they are but can’t tell names. Some are famous and some of them have already paid the price for it so it’s only fair I leave them in peace.
My agent in Paris was selling me to men without me knowing. She would pretend there was a photographer I should meet. I would show up to the dinners, she would be there not pushing anything but hoping this dinner would lead to another one if things clicked between that man and me. One dinner was with a famous journalist, at some point during a dinner one of his colleagues showed up saying he was off to Iraq the next day. The attention drifted towards him and the first journalist we were originally having dinner with exploded and left. My agent followed him and tried to cool him down. That’s when I heard him ask what was up with me now. He had been giving her money to meet with me more often. A weapons dealer I met confessed to me she was also running the same scam with him, he had been giving her money every month to meet her girls. There are definitely two parallel markets, modeling and prostitution that are intertwined.”

When I was modeling in my early days I went to Milan seeking representation and bookings. Some agencies turned me down to sign with them but every single one invited me out that night and were quite aggressive in getting me to come out. By the time the third time happened I had cottoned on and would refuse politely. The head of a famous Italian multi talent agency saw me in the corridor of his offices waiting for a booker and ushered me into his office. He was obviously gay so I saw no reason to question his motives until he invited me to a party he was throwing that night and wanted me to accompany the director. He even phoned the man in front of me. Luckily I understand Italian so was able to avoid a sticky situation but I’m sure my career stalled because of that refusal, they sent me to mediocre castings when they had access to the bigger names in fashion, TV and film.

Muriel herself has been in this kind of situation. “The Milan issue is famous, they are all pigs there and agencies work closely with club PR’s who are trying to get the young naïve girls from poor communist countries whose parents have signed a waiver. Sometimes much further than these girls would have hoped for.”

As a commercial model Muriel was working for 14 years even applying for a VAT number so she could take get own bookings and bill directly before quitting the business to become a mother.

“When I became pregnant and it all came to a standstill slowly but surely. It was extremely difficult to find something else that could remotely compete with the life style and freedom I enjoyed for so many years but when I look back I am so glad I did it, times have changed. When I started, girls had shapes. Today, anyone can be a model. You have to be super skinny and your career doesn’t depend on you much, mainly because other people decide and make the trends have changed.
After 14 years of not knowing when money is coming next, especially when you have a family, all I wanted was stability. Funny enough my transition into a more normal world was made easier when I met my partner Bruno and lived in a military barrack for over three years where everyone is the same where there is no glamour and where the community takes over the individual. It has helped me to bury my ego, even out my difference and my experience. It has made me a better person.
With modeling you have that feeling you’re never right, that you could be replaced anytime, that you are just a number.”

Now living in London and a team assistant at a London based hedge fund any regrets?
“I did not know Gianni but he was a cornerstone in fashion, as I said he created the word ‘Top Model’ and all these super models became who they were thanks to him. I was doing his haute couture show in Rome when he got killed. It got cancelled. That’s how close I ever was from Gianni!

Algina Lipskis is a 22 year old actress aspiring in a hard knock industry where talent, looks and who you know have blurred edges and merge as one. Sheer talent is not enough you need tenacity and charisma in order to survive.

Based in London she first started out at the Sylvia Young Academy, a talent school famous for producing stars in music and stage, Amy Winehouse was a pupil there.

The blonde Lithuanian born beauty saw Basic Instinct at only six years old, which inspired her to then become an actor.

Having started her acting career as a Harry Potter extra, she soon progressed to film where she stared in ‘The Lost Prince’ then TV roles, which led to a short stint on the popular UK, soap Hollyoaks. Having just completed a Bollywood feature film,’ Excuse Me Please’, Lipskis is not allowing herself to be type cast, instead asserting herself in the industry. You may have seen her face on various print and TV commercials such as the 888.com poker site and the MTV produced commercial for a Nintendo DS game.

A pocket sized social butterfly but fully focused on her career she gives us a taster of her life.
What do you do?
I’m an Actress with a little experience in commercial modeling but acting is my profession and the main career path.

When did you move to London?
I came in 1994 when I was 8 with my parents from Lithuania. I think they were looking to find a better life and seek bigger opportunities for happiness.

What made you get into acting?
I grew up in front of a steady cam on record most of my days living in Lithuania, not a year went by where my father didn’t shoot some sort of footage of birthdays, days out by the beach and in general some sort of fun event and I guess that’s how I become very comfortable in front of the camera.
We didn’t have much but we made most of what we did have, growing up by the Baltic Sea and having parents that were both very artistic, active and free spirits helped me see more and understand a lot at an early age. That experience has made me more expressive and opinionated.
My father had a mini in-house cinema at the village we lived in and he use to have movie nights every weekend and I remember as a child I always sneaked in and sat next to a local whom I knew wouldn’t give my little secret away. I think I was six years old when I watched Basic Instinct and I can vividly remember I didn’t finish watching it because my mother found out and dragged me out by my ear.
At what age did you realise you wanted to be an actor?
I only started understanding the effort and talent that goes into becoming a respected actress when I was on set of the Emmy Award winning BBC drama ‘The Lost Prince’ by Stephen Poliakoff.
We shot it in the summer of 2002 when I was 15 and on set filming with Miranda Richardson and Gina McKee.

My character was Anastasia, the youngest daughter of the Tsar. It was a small role but a big one for a beginner like me, watching the great actors at work made me realize this was the path I wanted to take. I wanted one day have a big role like Richardson’s or McKee’s and I absolutely loved being someone else, being able to impersonate and live someone else’s life through a script for those hours of the day that your onset. In front of the camera, there are no boundaries in acting and that to me is music to my ears, I loved it and from then I set myself to become one of those actresses.

Where have we seen you?
I started off as an extra in the second Harry Potter film as a Griffindore. It was amazing to be on set of such a huge production, it gave me a taste of BIG budget films.
I then had a small role in ‘The Lost Prince’.
I played the lead in a feature called ‘Natasha’ and featured in ‘Telling Lies’ with Jason Flemyng and Melanie Brown.
Recently I've just shot a short film for the film festivals next year called ‘Level Playing Field’ and completed a Bollywood film called 'Excuse Me Please".
What’s your acting style?
I’m fond of dramas and films. I've not yet reached that level where I feel I’m ready to do stage, it’s something in the distant future, I have so much more to achieve before then.

I always seem to have more respect for the more mature actors that take up stage rather than the younger ones, I just think you need a lot of depth and understanding when it come to stage.
I’m very selective when it comes to theatre but I could watch Kevin Spacey at the Old Vic all day every day.
He is truly talented and makes you forget you’re watching actors; he takes you there making you feel like an intrusive fly on the wall.

I do love indi films and I would love to do some. That’s the fabulous thing about acting: once you become established you start receiving scripts you can pick and choose the challenging ones for you. I’m always ready to be out of my comfort zone and in someone else’s shoes whether it’s a big budget feature or a short.

Who/what inspires/influences you and your style as an actress?
I love watching black and white movies or the classics, like Casablanca, Breakfast At Tiffany’s and All About Eve.
I just find that era so glamorous, beautiful and the presence of the leading actresses just hypnotise me, the likes of Monroe, Hepburn and Bergman are so inspiring.
I’m also a huge fan of Barbra Streisand, I think she’s an all round performer and captivating as an actress.
There aren’t too many actresses out there these days that I find influential because a lot of them aren’t about talent, it has all become very superficial and the public care more about who their dating, what size they are and if there are any home videos to be found on the web. It’s sad but that’s the world we live in. Although saying that actresses such as: Charlize Theron, Hillary Swank, Nicole Kidman and Rachel McAdams are wonderful and stay on the level of talented smart actresses.

What director would you kill to work with?
(Laughing) I would never kill but there are two directors who have very different styles and I couldn’t possibly choose between them: Quentin Tarantino and Clint Eastwood.
They’re not afraid to take risks and their imaginations and powerful work just makes any picture come to life.
What film/movie do you wish you did?
There’s an unknown film called ‘The Thing Called Love’ starring the late River Phoenix, I would of love to have had Samantha Mathis role. It’s a simple film, with a great cast.

What advice can you give to a young person (or parent) wanting to get into acting?
You have to be prepared to struggle. You need to believe in yourself most importantly and be certain it’s what you want to go into. If you don’t have a hard shell and can’t deal with being rejected repeatedly then this might not be the business for you. The focus is to believe in you.

What’s the best thing about your craft?
You know I love meeting people with the same passion, creating another family every time you go onto a new set, traveling, staying in gorgeous hotels.
Each time is a different adventure; you never know what’s around the corner and that’s exciting.
What’s the worst?
There’s not much to be honest perhaps shooting in bad weather especially if it’s a low budget film. Lack of sleep and waiting around to see if you got the part. As weird as it sounds I actually don’t mind castings, its like therapy for me. It’s a challenge and I like to show what I've got
What do you currently have going on?
I have a few projects lined up but haven’t signed any contracts so we’ll see; I won’t jinx them but let’s keep our fingers crossed!
I will say that I've just finished shooting a short sci-fi film called ‘Level Playing Field’ where I was dressed in a blue wig and blue lycra leggings being chased around the woods by red orbs. That was an active shoot and extremely cold.

It's my first port of call whenever I'm in Manhattan although I am mildly distured she has ruined my routine by moving from Broadway. It was perfect: Atruim, then Baby Phat, then Patricia Fields. In a nutshell interview- Fashion Designer Rebecca Simone

Rebecca Simone is a celebrated London based womens Fashion Designer. The 29 year old draws inspiration from Roberto Cavalli and celebrates the female form resulting in feminine silhouettes and head turning creations. She is without a doubt one of my favourite designers and alot of her one off samples live in my closet and lingerie drawer!
Her lingerie and dresses are been seen on Mariah Carey, model Jakki Degg and used in numerous celebrity photo shoots.
Born on the same day as Marilyn Monroe, her bubbly exterior hides a ambitous business mind bent on world domination.

She tells Starbright the highs and lows of being an aspiring International designer.
What do you do?

I’m a women’s wear Fashion Designer. I mainly design and make lingerie for 18-30 year old ladies as decorative bedroom wear. Think silk chiffon with pearls. I also design swimwear and make one off evening and party dresses on request. I own my clothing company under the label Rebecca Simone, in which I currently sell to small boutiques around the UK and online. I have recently began designing and making men’s tees and ladies tees with hand painting and embellishment of Swarovski crystals.

How did you get your position?

I knew I wanted to be a fashion designer from the age of 15 so after A-levels I took an Art Foundation course. I then got a degree in Fashion Design at Kingston University. During University I had experience designing for United Colours Of Bennetton, Dewhirst, J-Crew, Maxmara and Limonta. The experience in the real world was exactly what I needed and really shows how the industry works. After Uni I worked for a few different companies including a Turkish denim company and a London based jewellery company. For both companies I worked at trade shows and saw how to build a label from working behind the scenes.

I then freelanced for a London based company designing and producing samples every day mainly embroidery designs which were sold in London, New York, and LA to name a few. These designs were sold to companies such as New Look who would produce items in the thousands for all their chains. This was when I realised that I was not making the money from my own work and decided to branch off.

I researched into setting up a business and came across Portobello Business centre. I was lucky to be living in the area and took a part time Fashion management course to learn about business plan, trade shows, sales, buying, trend forecasts etc. After 6 months I qualified and produced a business plan which I showed to the Princes’s Trust and received funding of £2000 and 3 years of free legal advice, accounting and all a design business needs to be successful. I was also given a mentor who helped me during the start of my business.

I am still receiving help through the Portobello Business centre. I’m also a member of Fashion Capital, a fashion network that helps fellow designers connect and help each other. I also receive students and work experience from different colleges which help them.
I recently entered a competition with Walpole Group and AMEX where I became a finalist and am awaiting my presentation on October 21st for the chance to win £3000.

What has been the most rewarding thing so far in your career?

This Walpole competition has been great as it has proved to me that what I am doing is right and that people have faith in my label as I was chosen by many of the Walpole members who include: Burberry, Links of London, Gieves and Hawkes.
I also feel extremely proud whenever I see someone wearing my designs. I started out by selling on Portobello Market and I would often see people during the week walking around London with a Rebecca Simone jacket or trousers

And the worst?

The long hours and at times I wonder when I will get that big break. I work so hard but sometimes I wonder if I’m doing the right thing but really I know I am. The economy at the moment is not great and buyers are not taking risks and buying new designers or new stock. I had to turn this around to producing the t shirts. I found that the profit margin is bigger, my paying out costs are less and I have a faster turn around. At the start it was a bad point and rather worrying but I’ve turned it around and received a profit of £450 in one day of sales!

What advice can you give to up and comers?

If this is really what you want to do then stick with it.
It’s not easy in fact its very tough. Designers and people in the fashion industry tend to be very rude and abrupt but you have to be strong and stick to your own opinion.
Never be swayed even if it’s a tutor telling you to change something, if you believe its right stick with it.
I would join as many help sites ie Fashion Capital, Portobello Business centre and apply to as many competitions as possible. Try Fashion Fringe noted for helping house hold name designers, Topshop is a great one.

Always watch what’s going on in fashion through websites like New York Times, Drapers magazine, Vogue etc. Always be ahead of yourself. Think fashion, eat fashion and sleep fashion. Always think commercial, a business is to make money not just design pretty clothes or something you like, look at the bigger market, remember your doing it to make money! Be business wise at all times, don’t overspend on pieces if you cant sell it wit h a profit. Research competitors, trends, who’s wearing what, why is that dress in the press, haberdashery prices, fabric costs. You have to keep up and be relentless.
It’s not easy I can tell you but if its your dream fulfill it, just fulfill it the right way.

Whats your fashion style?

Im very feminine, quite girly girl but sexy at the same time. I always have pretty girls modelling with curves and natural everything. Pink is very dominant in my collections but in a sassy way not trashy way. Decoration is always my trademark, from pearls to Swarovski to beads to frills. Flattering the figure is a must and structure is important in the way that I enhance boobs and bums and flatten stomachs. Feminine feminine feminine!!!
Favourite designers?

Roberto Cavalli is number one for sexy feminine shapes, bright colours and diva designs. Some of Julian Mcdonald designs are stunning. I love the cut and thought in Alexander Mcqueen collections.

Seeing as it's London Fashion Week its only right I add another interview with a celebrity stylist.
Ex glamour model Jamelah from London has recently become Katie 'Jordan' Price's stylist. The 31 year olds new transition is completely different from her last job as we'll let her explain.

What do you do?
I am a fashion stylist for Katie Price aka Jordan and Peter Andre.
I choose and call in clothes for various photo shoots, TV appearances and events.
This is fairly recent as before this I was a female boxing promoter and successful Glamour Model.

How did you get to your position?
I modeled from the age of 17. I had a very good career and met a lot of people on the way. One of them being Jordan. I also built up a very good relationship with my model agency. After 10 years of modeling I realised I to think of something else to do as I was no longer passionate about modeling anymore.
I found a new passion...Boxing which I did to keep fit. This lead to taking part in a boxing competition in LA that I won.
After this I decided that I wanted to give other models the opportunity to box so I got an investor and that was that!
I called it Catfight and went to the top Glamour and commercial model agencies in the UK to recruit models.
We basically filmed everything from day 1,made a six-part reality show series showing each fight and sold the series in 8 countries across Europe including DVD sales.

This was very hard doing this alone so my friend Katie Price gave me the chance to be her stylist.
Its the perfect job for me, I’ve always had an eye for fashion so its pure enjoyment. My goal now is to become a celebrity stylist and get my own TV show.... so watch this space!
What has been the most rewarding thing in you career?
I couldn't say one thing as I've been very fortunate but would have to be setting up my own company and getting it commissioned for TV...A great achievement for a ''model''

And the worst?
I would have to say the worst thing about my career is that being a model you are never taken seriously.
People think your stupid and everything is about what your appearance rather than you as a person.

Advice for up and comers
Girls get so many opportunities.... take them with open arms,
If you have a passion then go for it, take risks and don't expect everything to come to you. Chase your dream job. Passion is what has given me a great career.

I love designer bags and shoes. Marc Jacobs, Christian Louboutin. I love Roberto Cavalli for one off pieces and Joseph for basics.

London Fashion Week is here!!! The cream of London's designers such as Christopher Kane are showing along with the new comers.
My personal favourite designers who Ill be eagerly awaiting and watching their shows are: PPQ, Christopher Kane, Topshop Unique, Roksanda Ilincic, Julien Macdonald and Richard Nicoll.

Topshop showed their SS/09 collection today. Seemingly 80's stone washed inspired, bright petal prints on black and massive bow head wraps. Britains latest hot model export Jourdan Dunn, currently fronting the AW/08 campaign, did what she does best and stomped down the runway in an belted YSL inspired grey sleeveless dress.
On my must have wish list is the white skinny legged tux and the Balenciaga inspired black angular dress. I would kill for this dress, an edgy staple at ease anywhere in the world and wearable in years to come. The AW/08 petrol blue irridescent Christian Louboutin booties would complete the ensemble something silly.

In a nutshell is a new rapid fire question corner where I ask creative successful women about their chosen career. It's inspirational and entertaining and will be featuring more and more women each week.
First is Marcella Woods, a talented successful chart topping house singer from London. Marcella, 37, can be seen touring all over the UK and some parts of Europe. With her striking looks and commanding voice, her gigs are sold out and packed to the rafters.
Describing herself as a "Bullet in a gun going to it's target" she tells Starbright the trials and tribulations of being a singer.

What do you do?
I am a singer/entertainer

How did you get your position?
The position am at was acquired through hard graft. I started as classical musician but I used to do some live singing with a band on the side although it was not my main passion at that time. After I graduated I was performing out with a pianist (with me on vocals) and I was talent spotted by a recording band called DEJA VU and that is where the proper recording journey began.
Through working and touring with them and also taking myself off to singers nights I met more and more people and I eventually met the producers that I were to have all my early hits with. When I started music my brother and I used to jam together when we were young and now it has gone full circle as we make records together now and have had two recent chart topping hits played on nationwide radio stations with another imminent.

What has been the most rewarding thing so far in your career?
I love the fact that you are completely INDEPENDENT. I do not feel like a slave to my work even when it is hard. The pinnacle of the job is when you get to sing to thousands and thousands of people who love your music.

And the worst? The emotional roller-coaster. Performance artists are known for their neuroses and Im afraid I am no exception. If things do not seem to be going my way I get very frustrated with myself and have periods where I don't want to do anything because its all too hard. But then that passes and I'm like a bullet in a gun going to its target.

What advice can you give to up and comers?
Strap up and hold on tight. You better be one tenacious f**ker cos it's constant knock backs. Drive and luck and charm (knowing how to talk and socialise with people) are very important as well as the talent. Best tip: Write your own songs where possible ......... Publishing is a nest egg.
What's your fashion style on and off stage?
One word.............. "D I V A"
Favourite designers? Do you have a costume designer? I have a friend Marcia Mills who makes my costumes. Also my mum and I have make some of my over the top flamboyant attire.

St Tropez baby!!

When a trip is suggested or offered to St Tropez you don’t say no.
Glamour, Glitz and Champagne are all on offer but you can do St Trop, so dubbed by the French, far from the maddening crowd and with children.
However me being me, with a penchant for fabulous dresses that scream to be noticed and a yacht ready body, I don’t do things quietly. We were going to St Tropez to party and by gosh we plan to rock out.

St Tropez is the one of the best islands to pop over to for a weekend jaunt. Multiple flights a day via BA and Easyjet to Nice make a debauched weekend very accessible. Party season starts in May and builds up to a heady crescendo by August with the season usually ending first weekend in October after the Les Voile de St Tropez. A rendezvous of sail boats and yachts competing for the Rolex Trophy.

The mis-adventures kicked off Friday morning with the birthday boy toy and our entourage flying out bleary eyed with Easyjet.
St Tropez is a 2-hour drive from Nice airport so the only quick crease free way to travel is by helicopter.
But darling, you howl, of course.
There are three helicopter companies operating within the airport flying to various points on the Cote Azur even dropping to private residencies.
We flew with Heli Air Monaco taking 20 minutes from A to B. I highly recommend this as it’s the only way to travel, avoid traffic and can fit you and all your friends. Anyway, who wants to drive 2 hours when all you want to do is spray champagne over a Slovakian model aboard your chartered yacht and bake at Nikki Beach?

Instead of staying at the usual suspect and difficult to get into Byblos hotel try the Benkirai Hotel.
Voted onto the Hot List 2007 by Conde Nast Traveller, a hip discreet luxury boutique hotel aimed at fashion and music types close to the town centre. Designed by interior decorator Patrick Jouin who was previously in charge of furniture design at Phillippe Stark’s studio. Expect an elegant calming environment with ingenious bright block colour, sharp angles and surprising use of space. Definitely a fashion hot spot as we saw Matthew Williamson, the head designer at Pucci, stalking around the pool and sketching at the bar.
A large pool amongst decked wood and scented trees sets the scenic backdrop for the restaurant and bar.
Although being a flirty thirty something clientele, this is not a wild party stop on the way into town and the only black mark is no 24 hour room service, food stops at 22.00 however they operate a taxi service free of charge at all hours.

During the day the best party beach clubs have to be Voile Rouge and Nikki Beach. The latter is set completely against a white background, complete with large beds and a sushi restaurant, attracts a wild beautiful model crowd ready to gyrate to the pulsating house beats and pout prettily around the pool.
The Voile Rouge, the Red Flag, attracts a slightly older mix of celebrities, rich Rudskis and glamorous high-maintained French women you try not to stare at. Catered for the super rich the food is expensive and people mostly come here by yacht.
Music normally starts at 5pm but our party group pestered the DJ so much he started playing from 2pm. An excellent backdrop to our dancing on tables, guzzling copious amounts of champagne laughing and generally being young, beautiful and having fun. A flashier version of the quiet calm but equally stealth wealth Club 55. The food is excellent and the staff attentive but its very quiet and elegant here. In a word: Civil. If you like that kind of thing.

Les Caves du Roy is still a must although if you’re there more than 2 days you will have to endure the DJ playing the same track list every night.
I prefer VIP Room, it’s a younger 18 to late twenties crowd. R&B mixed with popular house and electro pop gets the place rocking early hours of the morning and is always packed so make sure you book!

With all that said and done don’t miss your flight home, St Tropez is like the Sirens: You know you shouldn’t get any closer, you should keep it moving but it’s so beautiful, so fun you cant help but gravitate towards it.

Idol of the Month-Carine Roitfeld

My current and long lasting fashion obsession is Carine Roitfeld.
The epitome of French chic, the 53 year old French Vogue editor has chic style oozing out of every minuscule pore. She possesses an innate rock and roll vibe immortalised by Tom Ford in all his previous collections for Gucci. Remember the poker straight hair and smouldering sexy smudged black kohled eyes? Carine.
She was his muse and he her mentor. She’s all messy haired and carefree.

I saw her once walking towards me on Rue du Faubourg Saint Honore, the Vogue offices are near by, chatting with a colleague. I clutched my boy toy and stared, we made eye contact, she looked at me questioningly as if waiting for me to say something, I couldn’t and the moment passed, she resumed her conversation and I was left in an excited sweaty heap.

Its not just her enviable style and that she is the woman Tom Ford chose as his muse makes me love her but her unwavering belief in not bowing down to the major fashion advertisers. Advertisers are where fashion magazines make their money and there is immense pressure to pacify and bow down to the major money fashion houses by pushing their labels and advertising their garments in shoots. She refuses, if she dislikes an item she makes no bones about it and will not feature it. She has balls of steel which if women want to get ahead in business will require.

The October issue of Vogue has a Mario Testino shoot where a model is adorned in huge lavish furs surrounded by extras dressed as PETA activists waving banners. In an interview with Style magazine she revealed: “Maybe they think it’s not funny to talk about dead animals but I like pushing ideas. I love clothes but it’s not enough for me. I like to reflect life, society and in my world, there has to be fun.”

I love her red carpet or front row poses. When she laughs she has the look of a very naughty girl who has a secret, like she’s just done a quick line in the toilets. A carefully groomed raised bushy eyebrow and those mischievous twinkly eyes. Ahh Ms Roitfeld I salute you.

Darlings I'm sorry. I abandoned you and took my fabulous self to Capri, the Internet connection was molto flaky.
I was so happy I could rock casual chic day wear consisting of gladiator and gold leather thin thong sandals with tiny bikinis, kaleidoscope colours day in day out without worrying about rain. By night it was Lanvin-esque ruffles and Herve Leger numbers with Glamazon heels. Hell you could wear fur here and still be accepted.

Living la dolce vita is definitely the theme in Capri, a small island attainable from Naples or the Amalfi Coast, Gozzo's jostle for space amongst the mega yachts, weekend passengers descend from the ships with LV and Goyard luggage in tow and celebrities try to hide behind huge sunglasses from the evening paparazzi. Yes there are paparazzi on the island and photographs cover nearly every restaurant's walls. Mariah Carey is rumoured to have a home here.

There are only a few hotels on the island, one of the best being JK Hotel. www.jkcapri.com. Set on a cliff the chic boutique hotel offers an unbeatable view of the sea. White washed walls, young friendly staff and a stylish crowd complete the hotel as a must.

The luxurious 5 star hotel Quisisana www.quisisana.com is also a favourite for elite travellers.

The only black fly for Capri is the daytime. It's hell. Mass tourists descend like unwashed unwanted locusts under the glaring heat. Queues for the ships, cable cars, taxis, ship tickets stretch for years. The masses of people can be seriously off putting.

Would I go back? Of course!!

Beauty Fix-Toes

There is nothing worse than unsightly yellowing toe nails on men and women.

A quick DIY beauty fix you can do anywhere or even better in the sun is to buff them with a nail file.

Take off any nail polish. Use the flat side of a emery board (nail file) and buff your toes until you see a noticeable difference in colour.
Do the all the toes and get into every crevice.

Cut your nails STRAIGHT across, do not follow the curve. It will only encourage infections and ingrowing nails. Yuck!

File lightly then spray or dab oil over the toes. Wipe off with alcohol or polish remover.

Get a wedge of lemon, this where lying out in the sun is especially beneficial, and rub over all the toes. Let it dry.

Eh voila.. Healthy white toe nails.

Trends: A shape of things to come?

You haven’t got to love all the current trends, I mean I balked at the ugly Balenciaga hats shaped like horse riding hats. What is that? Who would wear that? Fashion victim is written all over your face if you, a mere mortal, attempt. I would never laugh at someone’s creativity but I would sure as hell bitch whisper viciously with my girls if I saw one of these on a perfectly coiffed head at a party. Know what suits you I say.

Throwing feminine shapes is scorching and the cocoon feminine silhouette is definitely that. Better known as ‘The Bubble’ egg shaped dresses in muted shades such as black are so stylish and cute it hurts. The elitist favourite, Bottega Veneta has a sexy black Monroe-esque cocoon dress as does Zac Posen and wallet friendly Pinko. For outerwear Donna Karen has got this amazing white coat that is on my wish list! Team this trend with sky high heels.

Sharp tailoring is everywhere. Masculine suits are a hot favourite with me. This look was hot long before Kate Moss was on the red carpet at Costume Institute in NYC 2006 when she teamed her Burberry blazer with skin tight leather trousers and a structured bustier. Some women in high fashion circles were ordering the smallest size in complete suits from menswear designer Heidi Slimane for Dior.
Justin Timberlake is all over this trend in SexyBack video.

Ralph Lauren is more extravagant in its approach with elaborate gold embroidery, very military which I like. I would love the short jacket with slim cut dark denim jeans with knee high leather boots stomping down the street like a modern day Napoleon. You need amour like this living in east London!

Layering up is a super hot trend but not in a total Grunge style more a little of Kurt Cobain hangs out with Lily Allen and Peaches Geldof. Leggings teamed with a skirt or dress, a large cosy cardigan tied on top of a t shirt. Keep it simple, don’t drown.
If you buy one item this season to keep up make it the shoes girls, platform shoes in subdued tones such as black, plum and forest green. Arrogant Cat has these amazing, may I say mildly clunky… Forest green Mary Jane Prada-esque style. But they work!

I'm the first one to celebrate style and all things fabulous so imagine my delight when I spotted an achingly stylish Asian/Oriental woman in the Bond St Prada boutique.

Her style was worn with a nonchalance only the time rich wealthy woman can possess.
You know the type...Lunches,'facials' with Dr Sebagh, chauffeur driven Bentleys and daily blow dries from their in house stylists.
She wafted in, sample sale thin to the point of emaciation and a cute up do.
I tried not to look but she commanded attention.

A Valentino-esque white sleeveless top that stopped short of her belly button with a small black bow tie neatly pinned at the neckline.
Black tight tailored jeans with 5 inch heels. A tiny red Hermes Kelly completed the ensemble.

I wanted to applaud but I, along with every woman in Prada, was trying to look like she wasn't even on the radar.
The one day I forget my huge dark YSL sungalsses. The one day!

Rinko Kikuchi- Japanese Actress and Chanel muse

Japans hottest export Babel actress on Cassavetes, sleepovers with deaf mute kids and Chanel.

Few outside Japan may have heard of the young beautiful blonde Rinko Kikuchi – real name Yuriko Kikuchi - but the film critics are in a frenzy over the actress’s extraordinary and daring performance as a deaf mute teenager dealing with her mounting sexuality, her mothers suicide and growing up in modern Japan as a outsider in the very talented influential director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s powerful 2006 film Babel.

With multi inter acting storylines running throughout the Oscar nominated film, it also stars Cate Blanchett and Brad Pitt.

Her playful childlike spirit seems to have captured even the most jaded and professional fashion and film community. Variety magazine – one of the most powerful film publications in the US – named her in the their ‘’ 10 Actors to Watch’’ list and Karl Lagerfield, who always seems to know a burgeoning actress set on cult status, has taken her under his black clad wing and seems to have given her stylist the entire Chanel SS 07 collection and couture as well for every red carpet social event. Rinko was also the model for SS/08 accessories collection.

She was spotted front row alongside Carine Roitfeld and Sofia Coppola at the Chanel couture show in Paris no less but she isn’t a run of the mill Hollywood starlet, you know - always socialising but hardly working, the cute yet edgy 28 year old is a very hard working and conscientious actress spending a year preparing for the audition alone. According to homecast.net during that year long process she went to a deaf school and spent a lot of time with the girls that attended the school. She hung out and went out with them, spent weekends together to really inhabit her role.

Her film role was in 1999’s Ikitai but really received credible exposure in the 2000 biopic film Sanmon Yakusha where her career took off and gained her recognition in Japan.

Babel is also her first Hollywood film after an 8 year successful career in Japan thanks to the passionate director Inarritu who she obviously has a lot of respect for.

According to asiasource.com and comcast.net she says ‘I had seen "21 grams" and "Amores Perros," and I was very much aware of Alejandro [González Iñarritu] as a director. I respected him very much from these two movies, and I very much wanted to get involved. It was sort of an overwhelming experience for me to actually work with him--it was the happiest moment of my life. He's a very passionate man and he treats everyone very fairly. And I guess that, on the set, knowing that he really trusted me and that he was obviously watching everything I was doing, I trusted him as well. It was a great relationship...he's really talented in the sense that he gets the best out of actors and actresses.’

She studied her craft in Japan after first starting out as a model at 14, the job she soon quit after realising it wasn’t for her. She was 16 before she really perused her desire to become a film actress after influences such as John Cassavetes films and cranbara actress Sayuri Yoshinaga made her want to achieve the same.
‘’Cinema is a kind of bible to me. I studied a lot from films - history, music, relationships between man and woman (laughs). I never did much studying in school. I was saved by cinema. So I figured that if I could enter the world of cinema, my life would be saved.’’ (Source: midnighteye.com)

Despite the Oscar buzz, the mounting fanatical hysteria from Hollywood, nominations from Golden Globes and Academy for best supporting actress Rinko is very level headed and matter of fact. She has been receiving work offers overseas than Japan.

Romantic comedies are tough, because so much depends on the interplay between the actors, the rhythm and the exchange of dialogue. It's a big challenge for me. As for international productions, I'm not necessarily interested in so-called "international productions," that's not so relevant for me, as long as there's a role that I can be passionate about, that I can be serious about and that I feel is worth investing myself in, I would take on any role from any country’’.

How do I look? Some have said like a high class Russian hooker, others a sexy R&B fashionista, a classier Kimora Lee Simmons but I like to think I channel a Columbian drug baron’s wife complete with big hair and an addiction.
Sometimes like a copycat Kate Moss. Mostly like my mother. Also like an international socialite. Depending on my mood.

I know what suits my body and exactly what I like, adore creating different faces and experimenting with fashion. It’s the worlds third biggest industry but Fashion doesn’t have to be taken so seriously.
I’m strong-minded and very much a woman, which reflects in my style. My influences are gleaned and sucked from fashion mags, music videos, pop culture, movie characters; Scarface’s Elvira Hancock is a favourite, chic destinations such as Capri, friends and worldwide city streets.

Ask me what my style is and Ill look you in the eye and say ‘ Darling I have no idea I just like to look rich’. That means effortless style or over the top opulence, give me python skin gold gilt strappy heels, chinchilla, sable coloured fox furs leopard print accessories and kaleidoscope colours.
I don’t want to look like you or my friends, heavily kohled eyes to your minimal look. A tight tuxedo to your near nakedness. I hate to blend in so an arresting perfume to command your attention is paramount and I certainly don’t want to march to the beat of trends and designers although I do feel the grand glamorous allure of Donatella Versace, Tom Ford and Matthew Williamson.
I aspire back to a world 70’s glamour; maxi dresses, high waisted trousers, bouffant hair, Jackie O sunglasses so I have to be careful of not looking older than my age and enjoy wearing minis, a wife beater and high heels.

Oh it’s ok but how so boring! Zero personality I am not.

Iconic Film Fashion Moment-Scarface

No one does it better than Michelle Pfeiffer as the cocaine addled mobster girlfriend in the violent epic gangster movie of all time, Scarface.

Drop dead beautiful and twenty-one years old at the time, her thin drug induced features, sleek platinum blonde bobbed hair and Venus grace dominated fashion in the early eighties.

We could over look her slightly shaking hands every time she lit a cigarette, her spindly wrists and even the fact that she despised Tony Montana as played by cinema great Al Pacino. We dismissed that all for the love of her slinky bias cut satin dresses, always in a champagne colour. For the furs in the nightclubs, for the diamonds she nonchantly wore.

When fashion icon Gwen Stefani released her second album in early 2007 it was Elvira she fashioned her look after, the platinum fringe hanging seductively in her eyes. To the Stefani-abes who feverishly copy her every look, and reviving the look on the streets, I’m sure the fourteen year olds blankly looking out from their heavy blunt bangs didn’t realise they were copying a great eighties icon who was really a glorified coke whore who went from what ever gangster could keep her in Columbia’s finest ‘cocaina’ and expensive chic clothes.

It is a look that is copied by women who want subtle night-time glamour, it’s not as recognised as the little black dress and pearls as defined by Audrey Hepburn it is an image us bad girls love to emulate. Elvira, we salute you.
